The departments that we call Home

Human Resources

The HR Department is the place where sharp minds meet big hearts! Our fun and outgoing team is not only super attentive and analytical but also knows how to bring the right people on board and make sure everyone feels right at home. We’re all about creating a vibrant community, organizing exciting events, teambuilding activities, and skill-boosting workshops that keep our volunteers engaged and growing. We can’t wait to have you with us and make your volunteering journey as awesome as possible!

But you don’t have to believe us…let’s hear it from the volunteers!

Luca Alexandru Preda

Volunteer since September 2025

I didn't have too much experience with volunteering before ESN, so most of it was pretty new for me. The people, their spirit, and the desire to actually achieve something together really appealed to me after I joined.

As for the HR department specifically, I joined it because it seemed like it needed new volunteers the most, and I wanted to help. Getting to work more closely with my fellow volunteers was an added motivation to be active, as I wanted to create stronger bonds with the community.

On a personal level, being part of this department means trying to do and to be my very best, to always be there for people, and to never have regrets about my degree of involvement, thinking that „I could have done more, but I didn’t”.

If I were to describe the HR department’s activity with just a few words, I would say people, fun, and connections.

Honestly, initially, I was very indecisive about choosing a department, but by doing some introspection, I realized that HR would be the most suitable one for me, as it is the place where you really understand people, help them connect, and contribute to the team atmosphere.

Within ESN, I found something different from other experiences: the volunteers’ energy and openness. Here, I discovered a very friendly environment where people are encouraged to get involved and take the initiative. I liked the fact that everything is very dynamic and that you feel like you are part of a community, not just an organization.

On both a personal and a professional level, ESN has helped me develop. On a personal level, it helped me get out of my comfort zone by getting to know the volunteers and by attending various events. Initially, I did not think I would integrate well, due to previous volunteering experiences, but I was wrong; I found an inclusive and authentic environment, where I quickly felt part of the team.

Professionally, I began to learn how to build a healthy environment in an organization, from communication to organizing activities that really bring people together. The fact that I have already helped organize a teambuilding event gave me more confidence and made me feel that my help matters.

With just three ideas, I would say the HR department means community, initiative, „Who handles this?”

I joined ESN during the second semester, around February, and I chose HR because my mother also works in this domain, and I thought it would be a good fit for me as well. I like to think that I'm good at working with people, plus I really enjoyed the idea of volunteering for volunteers :)

Compared to other volunteering experiences, what I like a lot about ESN, and what stood out to me in particular, is that the concept itself is unique - the fact that students are helping other foreign students during their Erasmus semester abroad to adapt to a new city, university, and culture is special. The fact that the team is entirely composed of young people is another aspect that makes ESN stand out to me compared to other organizations.

Personally, my involvement in the HR department helps me put my mind to work, to be more creative with what I do, to improve my organizational abilities, and to become a more responsible person, while also developing my problem-solving skills.

To put it shortly, for me, the HR department just says creativity, empathy, and ambition.

Communication

The Communication Department has the most creative people in the community. They are the ones responsible for managing the association's presence on social media at both local and national levels, the organization's own website, and other communication channels, including all our social media platforms. Additionally, if you are passionate about copywriting, content creation, Canva, Photoshop, or any other editing tools, this is the right place for you!

I've always had a passion for everything visual, and the Communication department became the perfect opportunity for me to use this hobby for something more, learning about how to do it for the benefit of those around me.

Compared to other volunteering experiences, I feel that ESN makes it much easier to create connections, with the spirit of Erasmus being the red string between us all. It is a hard experience to explain to those who have never had this opportunity, and so this community gives you the chance to re-live that feeling. Even if you are a volunteer without having been a student abroad, everyone is always open to new connections, new ideas, and as many memorable experiences as possible, so you can find yourself among this crowd and in this atmosphere anyway.

Personally, getting involved with Comms simply means developing the skills related to my passions and chiseling them. At the professional level, for now, I couldn’t say that my involvement in this department has any concrete results, with it not being my field of study, although who knows :) I am now much more open to using my graphic skills in other contexts outside pure entertainment.

The three ”I”s that come to mind when thinking about the Communication department are inspiration, impact, and imagination.

I chose the Communication department because I have always liked everything revolving around social media and delivering messages to a crowd in an attractive way, both visually and content-wise.

During my previous volunteering experience at the Red Cross, communication was more formal and information-oriented, while in ESN I discovered a much more dynamic style, closer to students and well-adapted to the international youth vibe. In addition, I was also in a recent Erasmus mobility, so I have learned based on my own experience about how important the communication aspect is for this kind of organization in order for exchange students to integrate within their local community abroad and to discover all the opportunities in the city.

For me, Comms is the place to be creative, to help Erasmus students learn about our activities dedicated to them & other useful things they need to know about the city to fully enjoy their time here during the semester.

On the professional side, I feel like I am learning super useful skills, ranging from how to communicate better and more effectively online to how to work in a diverse team and adapt quickly to various situations. It's the kind of experience that really sticks with you.

Creativity, impact, and good vibes are definitely what the Communications department brings to the table!

My main motivation for choosing this department is the fact that I am extremely passionate about the professional field related to public communication, advertising, and graphic design, so I thought Communications would be the best fit for me.

At its core, what I found different about ESN compared to other organizations and my other volunteering experiences is that the collaboration between the departments is much closer and more effective, making everyone’s experience all the more enjoyable, and leading to better results with all the volunteers collaborating so beautifully.

On a personal level, my involvement in this department means a lot of evolution - it symbolizes the time that I dedicate to something that, dare I say, might even give back a lot more than I could ever offer in return. Professionally, for me, the Comms department means evolution through practice, and an extended opportunity to learn from my colleagues in a way nicer, more pleasant, and more attentive manner about this domain than any other potential job could ever do.

I would say that in three words, Comms means presence, involvement, and, why not, color - the sunny side of communication, posts, and designs! Color is the strong point.

Events

The Events Department is all about organizing and planning activities for the Erasmus students. The volunteers who are part of this team are always fun to hang out with and always willing to help others! They are the ones who interact the most with international students, getting to know them and enriching their Erasmus experience by being present, active, and excited. So, if you like the dynamism of this department, help us by joining the Events department!

I joined ESN without any previous volunteering experience, simply wanting to get out of my comfort zone and meet new people. Choosing the Events department felt like the perfect way to do that. What I didn’t expect was how impactful it would become. I found a supportive community that became my family, and other amazing people, especially my buddies, who quickly became close friends. ESN introduced me to a whole new world: a sense of belonging, international connections, and personal growth that went far beyond my expectations.

Being involved in ESN through Events means growth, connection, and stepping beyond my limits. ESN has truly changed me - I went from avoiding speaking English to confidently connecting with people from all over the world, and from fearing an Erasmus experience to choosing to spend a full year abroad.

Through the events we organize, we don’t just create moments, we build connections, share cultures, and help Erasmus students feel at home in Bucharest. The most rewarding feeling is hearing them speak with love about Bucharest and Romania at the end of their journey, knowing we were part of that experience.

Events are all about diversity, critical thinking, and inclusion.

In addition to my passion for organizing events, I chose the events department because I wanted to contribute directly to the experience of Erasmus students. It motivates me to see that they feel good and enjoy our activities, but also the fact that I can have a concrete impact on how they spend their time here.

ESN is different through the community it creates, because most members have gone through similar experiences, which brings us closer together. It is a space where you feel safe and understood. On a personal level, it helped me to reintegrate more easily after returning from Erasmus and to look at things differently. When I joined the team, I was glad that I could speak openly and express my ideas. I like that everyone has the chance to contribute to the organization of events and that the proposals are really taken into account and put into practice.

For me, involvement in ESN through events means directly contributing to the organisation of events and the experience of Erasmus students. I see this department as an important factor in how Erasmus students form their perception of ESN, so it is essential that every event is well organized and leaves a good impression. I have the opportunity to see how Erasmus students enjoy, connect, and discover the city at events. I know how much these moments matter, because I also participated in two mobilities, and I want to contribute to creating the same positive experience for Erasmus students in Bucharest.

Personally, I believe community, belonging, and impact would best characterize the Events department.

My motivation for joining this department came from an interest in creating something that can be seen and appreciated by others. I take joy in seeing something I dedicated effort to have real-life results and feedback - a reason why I also started liking the more hardware-oriented side of computers and robotics.

Something that seems unique to me that I discovered in ESN is that, unlike other associations, we always try to create new events, new experiences for the students, not only recycling the same stuff. It's good to redo popular events, and I am all for it, but only doing that can stop the volunteers from actually enjoying their time in the association long term.

For me, putting in effort in my department means coming up with new event ideas, contacting and communicating with the representatives of locations when needed, planning out the activities, and being there during the event to have fun and assist however needed.

Taking into account my experience so far, I would say the Events department promotes creativity, results, and having fun.

Web Administration*

While not a department in its own right, the Web Administration Team is a curious, dedicated group of people who keep the digital heartbeat of our organization alive. They’re the explorers behind the screens, always eager to understand not just how things work, but how they can work better.

I chose to do Web Development in ESN as a way to use the knowledge I gained in the first years of my Computer Science studies for a real, tangible purpose, as I found many ways in which improving our website could help both local and Erasmus students.

In ESN, I found a very cohesive and active community, basically every day there was something to do interesting to do for everyone - from talking about Erasmus to local students, to showing international students our town, to creating important content for our website (and many more), there's always something interesting to do for everyone.

Being involved in ESN taught me that there are so many ways in which your activity can improve the life of someone you might not even know. Here, we work both for the local community and for the international students, and testimonials at the end of each semester really show how valuable ESN is for their Erasmus experience.

I would say the Web Administration Team is all for ingenuity, novelty, and proactivity.
